Estimation of the distributions followed by the main meteorological
parameters.
The main objective of this first WP is the determination of the statistical
framework within which the two basic meteorological parameters that will be used
- the wind speed and the wave height – can be categorized. Their choice is in
accordance with the applications that both have on renewable energy sources.
The proposed study will be based on a significant amount of data that have
resulted from previous research projects on related topics. More precisely,
within the European projects "ANEMOS" (Contract No ENK5-CT-2002-00665, duration:
2002.10.01 - 2006.09.30) and "POW'WOW" (EU DG-General FP6, SES6-019898,
duration: 2006-2008), the Atmospheric Modeling and Weather Forecasting Group
(AM&WFG) of the University of Athens, which participates in the proposed work,
developed integrated systems for the prediction of meteorological parameters in
the European region. These systems are mainly based on numerical weather
prediction models and run operationally for more than seven years leading up to
a major database. The obtained results will be studied in regions of Greece with
increased interest in developing renewable energy infrastructures (Evia, Central
Aegean Islands, Ionian).
Methodology
The necessary data analysis will be based on advanced statistical packages
(SPSS, EasyFit, etc.) and techniques developed in the proposed work. Classical
and non-conventional statistical tests will be employed in order to estimate the
probability distributions that fit to the data in study.
Deliverables
·
Data bases of meteorological forecasts and corresponding observations for
selected areas of Greece.
·
Internal (non public-) technical report
summarizing the results of this WP.
·
A web page dedicated to the presentation of the main project results will be
developed in order to support both the monitoring and coordination of the
project as well as the dissemination of the outcomes. The contents of this web
page will be updated throughout the whole duration of the project.
